Iron Firepit Care & Maintenance
1. Before Use
- Choose the right location – place your firepit on a stable, non-flammable surface (stone, concrete, gravel).
- Avoid direct grass or decking use without a protective base.
- Apply a light coat of high-temperature oil (e.g., vegetable or mineral oil) to the bowl before the first burn to help slow rusting.
2. During Use
- Burn only seasoned hardwood for less smoke and reduced residue.
- Avoid overloading with excessive wood to protect the structure.
- Never use accelerants (petrol, lighter fluid) – they damage the finish and are unsafe.
3. After Use
- Allow the firepit to cool completely before handling.
- Remove ash and debris after every use – ash retains moisture and accelerates rust.
- Wipe down with a dry cloth; for stubborn residue, use a stiff brush.
4. Preventing Rust & Weather Damage
- Iron firepits will naturally develop a rust patina over time. This is normal and part of their character.
To extend life:
- Store under cover or use a waterproof firepit cover when not in use.
- Avoid leaving standing water inside the bowl.
- Reapply a thin layer of oil occasionally to help protect the surface.
5. Seasonal Care
- In wet or cold climates, store indoors or under shelter when not in use for long periods.
Key Tip: Rust on iron firepits is natural and doesn’t affect performance – many buyers value the rustic, weathered look. Proper cleaning and covering simply help extend its lifespan.
Returns Policy
We understand the importance of customer satisfaction and therefore products may at ESR NZ discretion be returned to us for exchange for a store credit note within seven (7) days of full payment and collection/delivery of the goods, provided all the following conditions are met:
- A receipt as proof of purchase of ownership may be required by ESR NZ to be produced.
- Returned goods are received in a re-saleable condition, including any packaging if possible
- Goods are returned to the location they were originally purchased from or an alternative pre-arranged location.
For Online and store purchases not viewed in a showroom prior to delivery, they can be returned for a full refund (less any delivery cost) within 7 days of receiving/collecting the product/s. The above conditions will still need to be met.
