Queen Bed Frames With Room for Two and Then Some

Sharing a double with someone who starfishes gets old fast. Most New Zealand bedrooms have the floor space for a queen size bed, and the extra width is the difference between a good night's sleep and quietly resenting your partner by 3am.

Early Settler's queen bed frames come in solid timber, iron, upholstery and leather, across eight colours, with gas lift and drawer storage options built in. Every frame is designed to sit comfortably alongside the rest of your bedroom furniture.

What size is a queen bed frame?

Queen mattresses in New Zealand measure 153cm wide by 203cm long. The frame itself always takes up more room than that. A standard queen frame sits around 160cm wide and 218cm deep, since headboard depth and a footboard both add to the footprint.

Allow at least 60cm on either side for walking past and opening drawers or a wardrobe door. Queens are the standard size for New Zealand main bedrooms, which is why the range runs deeper here than in double bed frames or king single bed frames.

Do I need a queen bed base with the frame?

No. Every Early Settler queen bed frame includes its own slat support, so there is nothing extra to buy underneath.

The three terms get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Frames hold the mattress on slats. Separate queen bed bases are standalone platforms, in timber or upholstered, that sit inside or under a frame.

Ensembles are a base and mattress sold as one unit, with no frame at all. Slats hold the mattress and let air move beneath it. Ours come as pine slats or flat slat systems, so a queen mattress is the only other thing you need.

What are queen bed frames made from?

Early Settler queen bed frames are made from solid timber, iron, upholstery and engineered timber. Solid wood lasts longest, so a hardwood frame is the pick if you want it to outlast several mattresses.

Each material behaves differently once it is living in a room:

  • Solid timber – American oak, reclaimed timber and mango wood carry visible grain and gain character with age.
  • Metal frames – iron in a satin finish wipes clean and keeps an open, light silhouette.
  • Upholstery – velvet, bouclé, chenille and textured weave add softness, while real leather warms in tone as it ages.
  • Engineered timber – MDF and plywood combined with solid wood keep weight down without giving up strength.

Corner blocked joints are what stop a frame from loosening over years of use. Our timber frames are covered by Early Settler's product quality guarantee, so the construction is backed rather than just described.

Which queen bed frames come with storage?

Two mechanisms, and they suit different habits. A gas lift bed raises the whole base to open the full footprint underneath, which works for luggage and out-of-season bedding you reach for twice a year.

Storage drawers are the better call for anything weekly. Our four-drawer storage bed lets you open one at a time without shifting the mattress or the bedding on top of it.
For a home without built-in wardrobes, built-in drawers win on daily use. Try the gas lift yourself first, across our 15 New Zealand stores, because the lift takes more effort than most people expect.

Are upholstered queen bed frames comfortable for reading or relaxing in bed?

Yes, and by some margin. Headboard height, foam padding and the angle of the headrest decide whether sitting up in bed works, and an upholstered queen bed beats timber or iron on all three.

Fabric changes how it feels against your back. Velvet is smooth and dense, boucle and chenille are soft with more texture, and woven fabrics sit somewhere in between. Leather is cooler to lean on and warms as you stay put.

Pleated and curved bedhead shapes add depth where your shoulders land. Our upholstered pieces carry Early Settler's comfort guarantee, which is the point of testing them properly.

How do I choose the right queen bed frame for my bedroom style?

Silhouette first, then finish. Shape decides how big the room feels, and colour decides how warm it reads.

Run through these before you commit:

  • Ceiling height – Low-profile frames make a room read taller, while four-poster and canopy shapes need real height above them.
  • Floor space – Classic open iron holds a strong shape without closing a tight room in.
  • Natural light – Bright rooms carry black, green, blue and red well in a contemporary space.
  • Warmth – Natural timber, brown and neutral bring Coastal Country warmth to a cool room.
  • Palette – Grey stays quiet enough to sit under a Scandi styling.

Where a new bed frame usually leads next

A new frame changes the weight of a bedroom, and everything around it suddenly looks like it belongs to the old room. Sort the mattress first, since the frame needs one to work.

Then the pieces that share the palette. Bedside tables set the tone on either side of the bed, and a chest of drawers or tallboy carries the same finish across the room. Dressers do the same job with a mirror.

Bedrooms rarely come together all at once, and sometimes the next piece is worth waiting for. Early Settler's Home Club is free to join, and members see new catalogues and upcoming ranges before they land in store. Handy when you’re still deciding what goes next to the bed.

FAQs

How long does a queen bed frame last?

Solid timber and iron queen bed frames last 15 to 20 years, often longer. Upholstered frames run closer to 10, because the fabric gives out before the frame does. Particle boards rarely make it past five. Early Settler builds with hardwood, iron and corner blocked joints, so the frame outlives the mattress on it.

Is a queen-size bed big enough for a couple?

Yes, for most couples. A queen gives each person about 76cm of width, which is roughly the same as a single bed each. Two adults who like more elbow room may prefer a super king for the extra 30cm of width. Measure your room first, since Early Settler's queen bed frames need around 160cm by 218cm of floor space.

Will any queen mattress fit a queen bed frame?

Yes, if the mattress is a standard New Zealand queen at 153cm by 203cm. Mattress depth matters more than people expect, since a very thick mattress can sit above a low headboard or bury the sides of a storage base. Check the depth against the frame before buying, or ask in any Early Settler store.

Can I buy a bed frame and mattress together?

Frames and mattresses are sold separately at Early Settler. That works in your favour, because you can match mattress firmness to how you actually sleep rather than accepting whatever comes attached to the frame. Choose the frame for the room, then pick the mattress for the two of you.
